Many teams struggle with overloaded backlogs, multitasking, and unpredictable delivery timelines. Kanban provides a simple yet powerful method to visualize work, manage flow, and continuously improve the delivery process.

In this highly interactive workshop, participants learn Kanban by building a Kanban system, running simulations, experimenting with WIP limits, and analyzing workflow metrics. The focus is on practical learning so that participants can immediately apply Kanban practices in their teams.

Program Overview

In today’s fast-paced product development environment, teams often struggle with too much work in progress, unclear priorities, and unpredictable delivery timelines. Kanban provides a powerful yet simple approach to improve the flow of work, transparency, and delivery predictability.

This 3-hour highly interactive workshop introduces participants to the Kanban Method through hands-on exercises and simulations rather than traditional lectures. Participants will experience how Kanban helps teams visualize work, limit work in progress, and continuously improve their delivery process.

During the workshop, participants will build a Kanban system, run flow simulations, analyze bottlenecks, and experiment with WIP limits and flow metrics. By the end of the session, they will understand how to apply Kanban practices immediately in their teams to improve efficiency, collaboration, and delivery outcomes.

Kanban is widely used to optimize the flow of value through a process using a visual, WIP-limited pull system.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is designed for professionals involved in product development, Agile delivery, and service management who want to improve workflow visibility, delivery speed, and predictability.

The workshop is particularly valuable for:

This workshop is ideal for teams that want to visualize their work, improve flow efficiency, reduce delivery delays, and build a culture of continuous improvement using the Kanban Method.

Course Topics

This module introduces the purpose, origins, and philosophy of the Kanban Method. Participants explore how Kanban evolved from Lean thinking and why it is effective for managing knowledge work. The session explains how Kanban focuses on improving the flow of value through a system, enabling teams to deliver faster and more predictably while reducing overload and inefficiencies.

Participants learn how to make invisible knowledge work visible by mapping their workflow onto a Kanban board. Through a hands-on activity, teams identify workflow stages, create work items, and visualize the flow of work. This helps participants understand how transparency enables teams to quickly identify delays, dependencies, and bottlenecks.

In this topic, participants experience the impact of WIP limits on productivity and delivery speed through a simulation exercise. By experimenting with different WIP limits, participants see how limiting parallel work reduces multitasking, improves focus, and increases throughput. The activity demonstrates the famous Kanban principle: “Stop starting, start finishing.”

This module focuses on understanding how work flows through a system. Participants analyze their simulated workflow to identify bottlenecks and constraints that slow down delivery. They learn techniques to actively manage work items, remove blockers, and improve flow efficiency to create smoother and more predictable delivery.

Participants are introduced to flow-based metrics such as cycle time, throughput, and work-in-progress. Using simple examples and exercises, they learn how these metrics provide insights into team performance and help improve predictability. Participants will see how Kanban teams use data to make better decisions and improve delivery outcomes.

The final topic focuses on how Kanban supports continuous improvement and evolutionary change. Participants learn how to use feedback loops, retrospectives, and small experiments to refine their workflow over time. The module emphasizes how Kanban enables teams to continuously improve their process without disruptive organizational changes.

Key Benefits of the Workshop

This workshop goes beyond theory and helps participants experience the Kanban method in action. By participating in hands-on exercises and simulations, attendees gain practical insights that can be applied immediately in their teams. Participants will benefit from:

  • Better Visibility of Work
Learn how to visualize workflow so that teams clearly understand what work is being done, what is blocked, and where delays occur.
  • Improved Flow and Faster Delivery
Understand how limiting work-in-progress and managing workflow can significantly improve delivery speed and predictability.
  • Reduced Multitasking and Bottlenecks
Discover how Kanban helps teams focus on finishing work instead of constantly starting new tasks, reducing delays and work overload.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making
Learn how to use flow metrics such as cycle time and throughput to identify improvement opportunities and make better delivery decisions.
  • Continuous Improvement Culture
Understand how Kanban enables teams to evolve their processes gradually through experimentation and feedback loops.
  • Immediate Practical Application
Participants leave the workshop with techniques and practices they can apply immediately to improve workflow management in their teams.

Workshop Format (Hands-On Learning Experience)

This workshop is designed as a highly interactive learning experience where participants learn Kanban concepts by actively applying them. The session includes:

  • Interactive Simulations
Participants take part in simulations that demonstrate how work flows through a system and how WIP limits impact productivity and delivery speed.
  • Workflow Mapping Exercise
Teams visualize a real workflow on a Kanban board to understand how work moves through different stages of delivery.
  • Flow Improvement Experiment
Participants experiment with WIP limits and observe how small changes improve flow efficiency and reduce bottlenecks.
